Chicago Cubs Digest
The team became famous as the Cubs in 1902 after a sports journalist remarked that the team played like bear cubs. The change in the nickname also changed the fortunes of the team. The Cubs won four NL Championships and two World Series victories from 1902 to 1912. The teams’ hitting and scores were affected in 1907, but their pitching was as usual exceptionally good. In 1916, Charles Weeghman as the new owner of the team gave the Cubs an opportunity to play in the new ballpark. In 1921, William Wrigley, an affluent chewing gum manufacturer took the hold of the team. He procured Joe McCarthy, outfielder Hack Wilson, Kiki Cuyler, Rogers Hornsby who with a team spirit took the Cubs to the summit of the league. After losing the 1945 World Series, the Cubs supremacy started diminishing. For 20 consecutive years beginning in 1947 either they finished in the second division, or bottom half, of the National League. They didn’t win any playoff series between 1908 and 2003. Ernie Banks also known as Mr. Cub became the first member of the team to earn the NL’s most valuable player in 1958. In 1959, he became the first National League player to earn an MVP honor successively.
